while enjoyment pervaded much of the week, islay was exposed to some behaviour not generally seen on the island for the rest of the year as seen through the police report and the letter from peggy maceachern included elsewhere in the paper. unsocial, not to say criminal, behaviour cannot be allowed to become a growing blight on what is the busiest week of the islay year and the police urge anyone who comes into contact with it to report it to them straight away. popular events do attract a wide cross-section of personalities, but the more unsavoury side of society will only prosper if the rest of us do nothing. that said, the vast majority of visitors treated the island and its residents with great respect and friendliness and we look forward to welcoming them back as old friends next may. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................... taking the floor at kilmeny's first 2018 ceilidh catriona bell writes: a good dancing crowd can make a ceilidh go with a swing and that's what we had at the kilmeny ceilidh, in ballygrant hall. to get feet itching to get on the floor you need the right music and the beat, and niall kirkpatrick is an expert at providing that. it says much for the atmosphere that margaret aitchison, ably deputising for chairman andy mccowan, confessed "i was still buzzin' next morning" . there was much more than dancing to the programme. beginning with ballygrant's own star singer libby morris, we know her voice so well, that it was instantly recognisable on the bbc alba documentary 'call air cladach ìle' and she made more fans among the ceilidh's international audience. so, too, did all the other artists; piper, isobel ferguson; fiddlers, morven and abby brown; singers katie mactaggart and morven brown, performing separately and, together with abby, in a rousing 's'ann an ìle. sophie baker, allana learmond and eilidh maclellan, all from keills, faultlessly danced a set designed by their teacher, ella edgar. we hope to see all the young artists back at more ceilidhs this year. angus mackay, wondered why he'd waited so long to be asked back. we've taken note and will make sure it won't be so long till we hear him again, his big voice filling the hall with the mingulay boat song, and many others. david ferguson's choices were songs from islay bards including 'fèis chun a bhard' , william livingstone's poem set beautifully to music by clare jordan. but that wasn't all. up volunteered alex johnston, better known as philco. alec may be 86 but his voice is years younger and can still wow an audience with songs everyone joined in. a pleasant surprise, too, when henry, aidan and oliver, three young men from a party of six american students spending just this one night on islay, entertained with two folk songs from their own country. altogether as margaret said in her report to the post ceilidh meeting "each one (artiste) added a very special ingredient to a wonderful ceilidh" . there's another talented programme planned for the next ceilidh on 19 june. we hope to see lots of local people there as well as visitors. andy mccowan missed the may ceilidh because he had a hip replacement the day before but he's home and recovering so we hope he'll be with us on 19 june. thanks to all who donated to the raffle, to catriona mcgillivray for her excellent baking, and all the volunteers who helped on the night. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................... book review students of hospitalfield by peggy beardmore. sansom & company publishing 139pp illus. £25. brian palmer writes: on attending gray's school of art in the mind 1970s, first year students were provided with classes in sculpture, design and drawing and painting. each of these offered a basic grounding in each of the disciplines and on entering second year, the least promising from both the student's and college's perspective would be dropped. thus, the second year, would-be artist spent 50% on each of their options, one of which would be discarded at the end of the year, leaving the maturing artist to study a single subject for the final two years of the four year course. i opted to make graphic design the sole focus of my art education, thus missing out on the opportunity to attend the turreted, sandstone building at hospitalfield in arbroath, a luxury afforded the most promising drawing and painting students during the summer months. artist and philanthropist, patrick allan fraser, was the last private owner of hospitalfield, leaving a bequest that subsequently founded the allan-fraser art college in 1890 within those sandstone walls. in 1935. the patrick allan-fraser trust
